BIOGRAPHICAL PROFILE
Victor M. Lozano
Mr. Victor M. Lozano is a retired intermediate school principal.
He served as a principal for 25 years in the South Bronx in
New York City and as an assistant superintendent in the same
borough of the Bronx. Since his retirement, he has been a consultant
to school districts, community-based organizations and a number
of colleges. Mr. Lozano has been recognized for this expertise
in the areas of school improvement, professional development
and community involvement. For example, Mr. Lozano had a front
page article written about him and his school in the Sunday
edition of the New York Times. In addition, an entire New York
State Department of Education bulletin covered his work in saving
and improving a failed Bronx intermediate school. In both cases,
Mr. Lozano was cited as the key ingredient for the success of
his school. He has been given numerous awards by such diverse
groups and institutions as the New York City board of education,
the New York City council, a local college, community organizations,
parent organizations and teachers.
Mr. Lozano attributes much of his success to his strong belief
in community involvement and parent literacy. He believes that
it does take an entire community to educate children. The school,
he believes, cannot do it alone. It was not uncommon for his
school to have 300 parents at a school function. He devised
many approaches to bringing parents into the school and then
providing them with the resources to help their children. He
even reached out to senior citizens and trained them to work
with his students. This is the expertise that Mr. Lozano brings
to the Bright Start Family Literacy program. |
