What is Bright Start Family Literacy?

Bright Start Family Literacy is a series of interactive workshops (a total of 12 hours), held at the school site during the day, evening or weekend. At each session, parents receive age appropriate activity packets for their children as well as books for their home library. Session focus on communication, literacy and effective parenting.

Who developed Bright Start Family Literacy?

Bright Start Family Literacy was developed by Gary Sonora Surdam (Educator, Parent, Founder and President of Bright Start Educational Consultants) who saw a need for literacy information and training that could be used by all parents, regardless of their educational level.

Who Are the Bright Start Trainers?

Bright Start Family Literacy selects parent trainers based on educational background, experience working with parents and families, bilingual abilities, and cultural consciousness. Our organization prides itself on providing trainers who are uniquely suited to a specific location and parent population.

How do I Pay for Bright Start?

Schools can use funding from Title I, Title III, Adult Basic Education, After School Grants, Close the Achievement Gap, Early Childhood Education, Early Reading First, Even Start, Head Start, Migrant Education, Reading First, Special Education, Stimulus Funding, or other State and Federal School Improvement Funding Sources.

How much do the Bright Start Workshops Cost?

Bright Start workshops cost a total of $190 per parent, which includes 12 hours of instruction by a Bright Start Family Literacy Trainer.

Each participant receives over $225 worth of books and materials.

Information: New Teacher Apprenticeship Program

Workshop Structure:
Four full-day (eight-hour) workshops, one workshop per day, with one month between each workshop

For:
Beginning teachers of elementary-aged or middle-school-aged children

Purpose:
Instruction for new teachers on classroom management, people skills, techniques for avoiding stress and burnout

Funding:
Meets requirements for Title One and No Child Left Behind funding

Included:
Four eight-hour sessions with a dynamic, personable Bright Start Educational Consultants, Inc. Educational Facilitator, $75 worth of books, activities and learning materials per day

Cost:
$125/teacher, per workshop day (Example: 30 teachers at $125/day = $3,750.00/day. $3,750x4 workshop days = $15,000.00 total)

30

Information: Bright Start Leadership Academy

Workshop Structure:
Three-day intensive workshop

For:
Motivated school leaders: Lead Teachers, Principals, Assistant Principals, Parents, District Support Staff, Assistant Superintendents and Key Coordinators

Purpose:
To create team-centered strategies to move schools to better classroom achievement, higher test scores, motivated staff members, and greater success

Funding:
Meets requirements for state and federal funding for professional development

Included:
First-class resort hotel accommodations at the Northwoods Resort in Big Bear, California (www.northwoodsresort.com); all meals, excursions and Academy extras; three days of strategic workshops taught by highly qualified Bright Start Educational Consultants, Inc. Educational Facilitators; all instructional materials

Special Offers:
One full day of follow-up instruction at the school site 30 days after the Academy's conclusion for each school sending four or more participants

Dates:
July 29, 30, 31, 2003

Cost:
$575/ participant, per workshop, double occupancy. (Single occupancy available for additional charge.) (Example: 4 participants at $575/ participant = $2,300.00 for entire Academy)
