Bright Start Family Literacy
Shows Results In Chicago Schools

One of our second grade teachers was having quite a difficult time with one of her students. Although she felt that he was more than capable, the boy did not do his work, he either daydreamed or was disruptive in class. She met with the parents more than once. The parents felt overwhelmed with their son's lack of motivation and seemed to be unsure of how to help him. I was pleased to see that his mother and father had signed up for the Bright Start classes. About halfway through the program, the teacher told me that the boy's work had dramatically improved since his mother and father had been attending the Bright Start classes.

What do Chicago parents have to say about the
Bright Start Experience?

I have learned so much, I don’t know where to start, but I will begin by saying that now I am much more patient with my children, and I try to communicate more often with them, as well as demonstrate my love for them. I enjoy the time I spend with them. Reading is now more consistent and it is an enriching experience. I have learned the importance of being involved in the school and in all my children’s activities. I have learned to listen with an open mind and heart.

I learned to pay more attention to my children and listen to them when they want to talk to me. I also learned to put everything aside and concentrate on my children when they need me for homework. This way they feel they are the most important thing to me. I try to motivate them to do the best they can in school. My children get very happy when we work on projects together.

Angelica Palomares

I have learned to be a better person, have more interest in my children’s education, and be more tolerant and patient with my children. This is important because it helps us to make our children more able to deal with problems and to be good citizens and contributing members of society.
